Torridge District Council Building, Devon

The brief was for a low impact single storey office building to provide new office space which integrates with the existing council offices sited alongside.

Set on the western banks of the River Torridge, the design takes into context its surroundings and prominent riverside location, as well as its constraints.

The use of a split mono pitch roof reduces the scale of the building and provides interest with an elevated canopy which gives a gentle “nod up” to the river when viewed from the east. The building is of steel frame and timber insulated structure and maximises the use of natural light with an extending canopy to offer some protection from direct sunlight, glare and overheating.
