Chi Winder and Chi Vesta, Homeless Centre, Cornwall

The Homeless Project has been designed and built to provide temporary accommodation for homeless people within the Redruth and Camborne area, alongside our client, Coastline Housing. It also provides support and training facilities to help homeless people rebuild their lives.

The building has been designed to fit into the surrounding world heritage mining site in which it is located, using a simple pallet of materials found in the area, namely natural stone and profile metal sheeting. The unique mining heritage being a main focus of the design as the main backdrop of the site is the sculptural industrial structure of South Crofty mine shaft and head gear.

The main building has 18 en-suite bedrooms and a separate block has two four bedroom houses designed to provide homeless people with facilities to move onto more independent / permanent accommodation. The centre is the first day and night facility in the county.

Angel, one of the residents, was chatting to BBC Radio Cornwall before the centre opened on 4th September 2019. Click here to listen to what he had to say about the project (from 1:06:00 until 1:10:00).
