Percy's
Restaurant
Located in the depths of North Devon, this
project provided a new dining area and bar for
the critically acclaimed Percy’s restaurant.
The design intention of the internal layout was to create a series of steps,
formed using mezzanine floors, towards a terraced garden which has distant
views of Dartmoor. The intention was to retain an individual, intimate space in
the bar area, on the ground floor, using low ceilings, contrasted with a doubleheight
space looking up into the open pitched roof. The top lounge and dining
areas are well-lit from the glazed gable end, and additional roof lights provide
morning sunlight to the breakfast area.
The wood stove is central to the building which adds to the intimacy of the bar
area. On the upper floor, the flue is emphasised by creating a ‘sculptural form’
which has latter been named the ‘ships funnel’. This acts as a screen between
the two areas and adds visual interest. The large glazed gable was intended
to focus the attention out into the adjoining landscape and floods the space
with natural light.
With a modest budget we had to gain a balance between optimum space and
quality of finishes. The interior detailing has been kept plain and simple but with
interesting focal points such as the zinc bar, limestone staircase with the black
metal balustrade and contrasting ash handrail.
