Trewin Design Architects worked closely with Sure Start and the Delabole community to provide a new purpose built building to run parent and child activity workshops and parent training courses for local families.

The design is flexible allowing a separate teaching area for adults at one end and a nursery / crèche at the other. The new building allows the existing facilities and sessions to be increased dramatically as well as the inclusion of other family activities such as appointments with the Health Visitor.

The domestic scale provides a more comfortable and ‘welcoming’ approach for both adults and children. The central ‘core’ of ancillary accommodation is elevated along the front and rear in natural Delabole slate acting as plaques to express the importance and tradition of the Delabole quarry to the village and its community. The single storey structure reduces the scale and impact in the open landscape and allows the internal facilities to be more flexible with easy access for all users. The concept is to retain privacy and security for the children with the nursery space being ‘closed’ to the front but ‘open’ to the rear play space while the adult facilities have been designed to front the ‘street’ to advertise them to the village centre.
