Penmead Close, Delabole, North Cornwall - The brief for this scheme was to design 10 dwellings for rent to local people on an infill site in the centre of Delabole, formally owned by North Cornwall District Council.

The identified need required a mix of 2 bedroom bungalows 2 bedroom houses, 3 bedroom houses and 2 bedroom flats.

There were considerable constraints on the site as there were existing dwellings on all four boundaries in relatively close proximity; it was also requirement of the scheme to create a contemporary design solution with sustainable credentials.

The design solution was to create dwellings with internal “sun spaces” on south facing elevations to allow the natural solar gain to gently warm the core of the dwellings.

These distinctive houses with simple detailing of horizontal grey boarding and large glazed porches have won much praise from many quarters, but most importantly from the residents themselves.

The scheme also won an ECO BUILDING OF THE YEAR AWARD in the 2008 Western Morning News/Michelmores Awards Scheme.
