Affordable HousingIsles of Scilly

Case Study for Cornwall Rural Housing Association who have a number of completed and ongoing projects on the Isles of Scilly.

Illustrated are completed projects at Old Town and Normandy on St Marys, with artist impressions of proposed schemes on St Agnes, St Martins and Bryher.

The scheme at Old Town consists of 6 dwellings (4 houses and 2 bungalows) built on a fragmented infill site within the settlement of Old Town, formally owned by the Isles of Scilly Council.

The dwellings are of simple vernacular type with natural slate roofs and some horizontal boarding, particular attention has been paid to details such as chimneys to ensure a traditional appearance.

The scheme at Normandy is in a more rural location and this particular scheme consists of 6 dwellings. A careful study was made of the rural building types on Scilly and the design reflects the typical “Scilly Barns” with parapeted granite gable ends and red pantile roofs.

The larger properties are more traditional two storey cottages under a slate roof.

The artists impressions are of a very exciting development to build two affordable dwellings on each of the “Off Islands” (St Agnes, St Martins and Bryher). All these three schemes have now obtained planning approval and when built will be the most remote housing association affordable schemes in Great Britain.
