PracticeApproach

Established in the early seventies, Trewin Design Partnership has a reputation as one of the leading rural architectural practices in the South West.

We undertake a wide variety of projects, from small domestic projects to large developments and have particular expertise in housing, education, cultural projects and workplaces. The practice offers a distinctive and sensitive approach to the design of residential, urban regeneration, education and leisure projects combined with the boldness and expertise to make them happen. The Practice includes Chartered Architects, Chartered Surveyors, Architectural and Planning Consultants who are able to offer a full range of Professional Services related to building design. We have built up a solid reputation for being able to provide practical design solutions sympathetic to the immediate environment within urban or rural settings.

“What matters is to design a building that responds to its particular place.”

Since 1984, we have been retained by the Duchy of Cornwall to advise on the design and suitability of projects built on Duchy land throughout Cornwall, Dartmoor and the Isles of Scilly. The Practice is structured in such a way that a Partner is always retained on a project from inception to completion. We believe that when Clients select a firm of Architects they should expect that their work is both perceived and overseen by the person they have directly approached or to whom they have been recommended. Wherever possible, we prefer to develop the brief and the design in collaboration with our Clients, using drawings to explore and explain the project as it progresses. As our Awards testify, even with tight financial constraints, we have built schemes of acknowledged architectural merit.

As Architects, we are able to produce both innovative and sensitive designs for both urban and rural situations and we advise on design and space standards, common methods of construction, planning requirements, building regulations and contractual procedures.

Our reputation for good design has enabled us to achieve a number of difficult planning consents for sensitive locations. The design of our buildings is derived from our understanding not only of the nature of the Client and the user, but also from the physical, cultural and historic context. This is reflected in the simple appearance of our buildings, particularly in rural areas, which we believe is fundamental to building design in the West Country.
